In general these papers failed to provide historical context for understanding the current challenges confronted by teachers and students in these comparative analyses. We share this analysis to demonstrate the paucity of work out there to tell educators about the fourth largest education system on the earth. We hope this paper will encourage extra researchers from Indonesia to share their research in international channels and that more colleagues external to Indonesia might become interested to find out about this distinctive and dynamic education system. We believe it’s of important significance for researchers from local contexts within the Asia-Pacific region to disseminate work to a wider international viewers so we that will all benefit and be taught from one another (Martin & Chu, 2015).
Today these universities are ranked among the many greatest within the country (Azra, 2008; Hill & Thee, 2012). Lack of access to educational opportunities for native populations contributed to rising anti-colonial sentiment amongst middle- and upper-class Indonesians. In 1942, with the Dutch unable to defend the colony, the Japanese invaded and occupied Indonesia. Initially, some Indonesians who had sought to escape Dutch colonial rule welcomed the Japanese invasion. During their occupation of Indonesia, the Japanese launched the first system of mass education, which opened schools for all college students and supported the use of native languages for instruction . However, similar to the Dutch colonial faculties, education in these colleges have been designed to assist the needs of Japan as an occupying power rather than promote the tutorial improvement of native Indonesians.
Even whereas the government financially helps many of those private educational institutions, these faculties have the authority to make use of academics and to offer education to the public. Following the war, within the early years after independence, the Indonesian authorities began to develop a national education system with a focus on providing free universal major education. From as early as 1945, Islamic instructional establishments known as pesantren have served as important facilities for educating college age students (Bangay, 2005; OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)/ Asian Development Bank, 2015).
